Signs & Symptoms + What Now ?

Women with PIP implants are at greater risk of developing associated local reaction and lymph node enlargement from a rupture.Pip implants can cause irritation.Some failed PIP implants caused local reactions. Leakages from other modern breast implants would not have this kind of effect. It's important to be aware of the signs that your PIP implant may have ruptured, and to know what to do
  • The current rupture rate is 25% - this means in one out of every two women with PIP implants will have experienced a rupture.**
  • PIP Implants are not high-cohesive silicone gels, but non-cohesive silicone gels. This means they begin to bleed as soon as they are implanted into the body and reach body temperature **
  • Some PIP Implants do not have a dual- bleed barrier,adding to the ease with which the contaminated silicones leach into the body, so even a Gel Bleed is just as bad as a rupture**
With or without rupture as there have been cases of  Fevers ,Muscle spasm and pain ,Swollen and Painful Joints, Rash`s ,Change `s in eye and saliva fluid, Hair Loss as well as other symptoms.It was thought that these complications occurred as a result of silicone gel leakage that spread to other parts of the body. It is only now the scandal has come to light that there are fears many women who have been suffering for years may well have been doing so due to leaks or ruptures caused by their implants.
Many women who have seen their GP`s have never been properly diagnosed. Many who have returned to their clinics / GP`s have been told the symptoms they feel are normal.
Our advice remains seek medical attention now to be on the safe side;Your health is the first and foremost priority; so make sure you receive medical attention straight away if you are concerned that the implants have leaked or ruptured.

Rupture
When a silicone gel-filled implant ruptures, a woman may notice a decrease in breast size, change in breast implant shape, hard lumps over the implant or chest area, an uneven appearance of the breasts, pain or tenderness, tingling, swelling, numbness, burning, or changes in sensation.Ruptures that show symptoms usually happen outside of the capsule. However,some ruptures are called “silent ruptures.”

Silent Rupture
Doesn’t change the way an implant looks or feels to a woman because the rupture occurs within the capsule.Silent ruptures are not usually evident by a physical examination by a doctor.Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is the most effective method for detecting silent rupture of silicone gel-filled breast implants.

A Gel Bleed
Is where tiny particles of silicone are released from the surface of a silicone breast implant. This can occur when the breast implant ruptures,or sometimes it can happen when there is no rupture.If the silicone particles get into the lymphatic system (the network of vessels that help the body to fight infection)

What Now ?

R&R&R (removal ,recover, rethink)  /  R&R  (What is Breast Implant Removal / Replacement? )
 Removal Only /En-bloc

Women in the UK do not receive the same standard of care as women in Europe.  In Europe women are advised to have PIP implants removed due to concerns over health risks and uncertainties surrounding toxicity, inflammation and immune system illnesses. UK women have been failed by the Health and Safety Regulator, (MHRA), with responsibilities for ensuring the safety of all high-risk, implantable, medical devices and the National Health Authorities. We know that some women are very afraid of removal without replacement surgery – the problems with this are:
  • PIP Implants are not high-cohesive silicone gels, but non-cohesive silicone gels.This means they begin to bleed as soon as they are implanted into the body and reach body temperature
  • Some PIP Implants do not have a dual- bleed barrier, adding to the ease with which the contaminated silicones leach into the body
  • Fraudulent PIP gels contain toxic, endocrine disruptor chemicals. These are of particular concern to women, pregnant and breast-feeding mothers.
  • Women are reporting more complications following R&R !  Many regret their decisions now they understand the real risks and complications associated with any silicone breast implants.
  • We encourage all those with PIP implants to begin their journey for removal today.

Removal Only / Explant **
We are a group of women at different stages of care and treatment, some of us have opted for Removal Only and taken a ‘Silicone Free’ route to health and recovery..Here is some of the information we found helpful when considering Removal Only options. At a time of difficult decisions and inevitable mistrust, women need access to good, clear, un-conflicted advice.We know many women have benefited from the help and advice found on Explant Info

What is Breast Implant Removal / Replacement?
Most surgeons will use your old scar to remove your old implant. If you have decided to increase the size of your existing breast implant your surgeon may need to perform an internal release of the breast capsule surrounding your breast implant (capsulectomy). This will make more space for the implant and can improve the appearance of the cleavage area. Breast implant removal or replacement usually takes between 1-2 hours to complete. Surgery is normally performed under a general anaesthetic and you will need to stay in hospital overnight. * Adrian Richards

En Bloc
removal of the scar capsule.

En-bloc
Most experts believe that removing the implants ‘en bloc’ is very important.This means that the entire implant and the entire scar tissue capsule surrounding it are all removed together.Removing implants en bloc makes it easier to remove any silicone that leaked from a broken gel implant, and also helps remove silicone or other chemicals that may have bled from the silicone outer envelope. You should ask your doctor if he or she has experience doing an en bloc removal.Removing implants en-bloc is especially important if you have been sick since receiving your implants
"Some experts believe that symptoms such as joint pains, chronic flu-like symptoms, memory loss, confusion, or a burning sensation could be a result of silicone that has leaked from your implant, and perhaps outside the scar tissue capsule."
  If this is the case, leaving the scar tissue capsules, or part of them,and/or silicone in your body probably isn’t going to let you recover as well as you might. It is also possible that while the silicone did not make you sick before, silicone that is left behind in your body could make you sick later, because your body will react this foreign material.

Pipaction Campaign` s Recommendation is;

Explant Info is for the express purpose of helping others with their Breast Implant choices explanting, helping ladies with the support needed to make this decision and in the recovery of their health after removing their Breast Implants, both emotionally and physically....  Lynne Hayes.

Remember Points;

** Women with implants should have an MRI (magnetic resonance imaging) The ultrasounds are not effective at detecting breaks, and you should NEVER have a mammogram with breast implants.
